The Grip Background Correct grip is crucial to successful play. No badminton skill is more important then holding the racquet properly. The correct grip enables power, accuracy, and versatility of stroke. Correct grip should be emphasized in all skills and activities. The instructor should constantly remind players to check grip. The grip described below is for both forehand and backhand action. There are, of course variations on this basic grip, some of which relate to the backhand. The subtleties of grip may be taught later in one’s badminton “career”. Points of Emphasis · Do not recommend, as some do, “to shake hands with the racquet” · Heel of hand should be at butt (flat end of handle) · Grip is neither limp, nor strong; be gentle · Frame, not strings, should be visible as grip is established · Thumb and index finger are somewhat extended; thumb lies diagonally across broader (flatter) side of handle · Other fingers curl around handle · A “V” should exist between thumb and index finger, the “V” points to opposite (non-racquet) shoulder · Grip is not fist like; feel for space between “V” and handle, and also between index finger and other fingers It is the combined action of index finger and thumb that determines the direction of the shuttle.
